Organization Overview:
The Katharine & George Alexander Community Law Center ("Law Center") is a civil clinical program of Santa Clara University School of Law. The Law Center has the dual mission of educating law students to be life-long social justice advocates and providing legal services for the low-income community. The Law Center educates law students in accordance with the highest professional and ethical standards by serving individuals and communities in need with competence, conscience and compassion through pro bono legal representation and education. Law students work under the supervision of experienced attorneys to provide free legal services in the areas of consumer protection, workers' rights, immigration, and their intersection with human trafficking. Our delivery model includes 1) community education and outreach, 2) advice clinics, and 3) full-scope and limited-scope representation cases, including court and administrative hearings. Faculty and staff also serve as leaders in collaborative efforts to increase access to the legal system for low-income individuals and communities and participate in media appearances, presentations, and training events.
A. Position Overview:
The Law Center seeks a Program Assistant (PA) to work within our Immigration Practice. The Immigration Practice screens community members for eligibility for immigration relief, provides limited representation on a variety of legal immigration cases, provides training on immigration law and issues, and participates with immigration and anti-human trafficking networks. The Law Center's representation focuses primarily on humanitarian forms of immigration relief (T, U, SIJS, and VAWA self-petitions). The Practice prioritizes providing survivor-centered and trauma-informed representation in partnership with survivor services organizations.
B. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Program Assistant will work under the supervision of the Law Center attorneys to support the Immigration Practice in providing 1) legal representation, 2) brief advice clinics, 3) community education and outreach, and 4) other duties as assigned, to manage time-sensitive immigration matters.
1. Direct Representation and Client Services
- Provide administrative support to attorneys on case development, client communications, hearing preparation, and drafting legal documents.
- Under the guidance of (supervisor), conduct client intake and gather relevant case information.
- Maintain calendars, schedule appointments, and complete documents, as directed by attorneys.
- General administrative and clerical duties, from answering phones to filing and making copies.
- Maintain complete and accurate client files in the Law Center's case management systems, shared drive, and other protocols, as appropriate.

- Support the Law Center Immigration Practice staff in developing and distributing information, flyers, know-your-rights presentations, and materials.
- Conduct training, community education, know your rights, and outreach in Santa Clara County.
- Collaborate with community partners to facilitate clients' access to resources.
