Position Announcement
As a content expert in writing and tutoring, the Writing Center Coordinator both directs Writing Fellows, a course-embedded tutoring program, and coordinates the Writing Center (which consists of the Writing Center, Writing Fellows, and the Graduate Writing Center).
As the primary administrator over Writing Fellows, the coordinator directs the program, partners and coordinates with faculty to support writers and writing in the disciplines, develops programming and resources, collects data, conducts assessment, helps hire and train fellows as tutors, manages resources, provides outreach, and supervises the assistant coordinator of the program.
In addition to directing Writing Fellows, the coordinator assists in providing leadership and management for the Writing Center. Under the direction of the Writing Center Director, the coordinator assists with strategic planning, assessment, collaboration and communication with stakeholders, program and resource development, and education and supervision of the Writing Center staff. The coordinator mentors assistant coordinators and ensures Writing Center programs maintain academic and university alignment by staying current in writing, tutoring, and adjacent fields. The coordinator also attends meetings, completes projects, provides committee service as assigned, and performs other duties as determined in consultation with the director.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Develop, Maintain, and Supervise Writing Center Programming and Services: Communicate and collaborate with the Writing Center director, assistant coordinators, and campus stakeholders to provide effective, data-driven, learner-centered writing support to students in courses across the disciplines. Work with Writing Center staff and stakeholders to develop, refine, and maintain in-person and online programming and resources, including tutoring, workshops, handouts, videos, and learning modules.
- Develop, Maintain, and Supervise Writing Fellows Programming and Services: Coordinate and collaborate with faculty stakeholders to maintain responsive and effective tutoring, workshops, and presentations in multiple modalities. Develop, maintain, and refine training materials and resources for course-embedded Writing Fellows based on active Canvas course materials for connected courses. Supervise student employee engagement in connected active Canvas courses on a semesterly basis.
- Writing Center Strategic Direction, Alignment, and Assessment: Assist with strategy and academic and university alignment tasks as part of Writing Center leadership. Remain current in the field of writing center studies and the direction of the university.
- Writing Fellows Strategic Direction, Alignment, and Assessment: Provide strategic direction Writing Fellows that is academically informed and university aligned. Conduct programmatic assessment and reports for Writing Fellows.
- Writing Fellows Staff Education, Mentoring, and Supervision: Oversee tutor education for Writing Fellows in conjunction with CRLA-certified Writing Center tutor education. Manage, assess, and refine Writing Fellows education resources in Canvas. Observe, assess, supervise, and mentor Writing Fellows.
- Writing Center Staff Education, Mentoring, and Supervision: Assist with recruiting, hiring, educating, and mentoring of Writing Center administrative, student, and non-student staff (50+ employees), including onboarding new tutors, writing fellows, office assistants, and assistant coordinators. Assist with mentoring assistant coordinators and teaching tutor education.
- Writing Fellows Resource Management: Ensure appropriate management, allocation, and accountability of resources according to university policy and procedure. Request, secure, and maintain resources for Writing Fellows, as part of the shared Writing Center budget, space, and staff.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned, including outreach, communication, and campus collaborations.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
- Master's degree in rhetoric and composition, education, linguistics, writing studies, or a closely related field and one year of writing center administration experience totaling seven years OR graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in rhetoric and composition, education, linguistics, writing studies, or a closely related field plus three years of writing center administration experience totaling seven years.
- Graduate from an accredited institution with a terminal degree (doctorate) in rhetoric and composition, education, linguistics, writing studies, or a closely related field OR graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree in rhetoric and composition, education, linguistics, writing studies, ore closely related field plus two years writing center/writing fellow/writing program administration experience.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Knowledge of and extensive experience in tutoring and modeling effective tutoring
- Knowledge of learning theories and instructional design in an academic setting
- Knowledge of and/or experience with using multimodal forms of instruction and delivery.
- Knowledge of and experience with Writing Fellows programs, including course-embedded tutoring and teaching or supporting Writing in the Disciplines (WID)/Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)
- Knowledge and experience with tutoring program administration
- Skills in effective interpersonal communication and collaboration to work with stakeholders across the university and interact with people of diverse backgrounds
- Skills in use of computers and computer applications
- Skills in tracking and managing statistics and information needed for decision-making and program improvement
- Skills and ability to foster professional and working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration
- Ability to identify and address program needs
- Ability to effectively use available resources
- Ability to be self-directed and complete tasks without supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and implement a variety of support systems, programs, and initiatives related to student writing success.
- Must possess a high degree of professionalism, initiative, creativity, tact, and confidentiality.
