Incumbent will provide comprehensive nutrition services for patients with inborn errors of metabolism through clinical practice, education, advocacy, and research. Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Provide nutrition therapy for patients with inborn errors of metabolism utilizing ongoing laboratory data, food records and growth patterns as the basis for determining dietary recommendations.
- Interpret medical, laboratory and dietary parameters to calculate prescriptions for special diets and medical foods.
- Communicate laboratory results and changes to diet/medication therapy to patients.
- Maintain records of patients' dietary prescriptions, analyses, growth and nutritional status, and education/counseling sessions.
- Participate as an interdisciplinary team member of the Metabolic Team.
- Provide consultative services to outside agencies and physicians for patients who are hospitalized or have special medical needs (e.g., MPKU) in conjunction with the medical director of the clinic.
- Rotate on-call responsibilities with other metabolic dietitians to provide inpatient nutrition consultation for hospitalized metabolic patients. Average on-call requirement is 1-2 weeks per month. This consists of being available via email/phone to the on-call geneticist Mon-Friday 8am-5pm.
- Provide patient education to metabolic patients on both an inpatient and outpatient service basis and develop new approaches for educating patients and families.
- Participate in division-based research and quality improvement projects.
- Coordinate with metabolic providers and medical secretary to submit documentation to insurance companies for medication and formula coverage.
- Teach nutrition, nursing, genetic counseling and medical students, and residents about diet therapy of genetic metabolic disorders.
- Develop liaisons with the Utah Department of Health, Newborn Screening Program, ARUP, IPAD, and pharmaceutical companies.
- Analyze diets for research and clinical studies using MetabolicPro and Food Processor diet analysis software.
- Plan and facilitate community events for patients and families (e.g., social events, medical conferences).
- This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects involving patient care or medical equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Registered Dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Current License to practice as a Certified Dietitian in the State of Utah.
Preferred:
- Two years of clinical/practical experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
- Nutrition Focused Physical Exam (NFPE) Training.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
