Research Specialist A (Department of Neurology)

Job Profile Title
Research Specialist A

Job Description Summary
The Research Specialist A position will work on developing and testing nanotechnologies for the treatment of acute brain illnesses, such as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. As outlined on our website (www.brennerbioengineeringlab.com), our lab packages drugs and gene therapy vectors into nano-scale carriers (~100 nanometers in diameter), and targets them to the organ and cell types of interest using affinity moieties (e.g., antibodies), cell-hitchhiking, and medical devices. We test these in mouse models of acute critical illness, as well as large animal models, and in ex vivo human organs. We often partner with existing companies and spin out our own start-ups, giving the opportunity to gain experience interacting with industry.

About the Principal Investigator:
Jake Brenner, MD, PhD is an assistant professor (tenure track) and attending at the University of Pennsylvania, where he spends 20% of his time attending in the ICU, and 80% developing technologies for pulmonary & critical care medicine. His nanomedicine lab is developing targeted drug delivery vehicles for acute critical illnesses, such as ARDS, sepsis, and stroke.

Sahily Reyes-Esteves, MD, PhD is an incoming assistant professor (clinician-educator track) within the Brenner group and attending at the University of Pennsylvania, where she spends 20% of his time attending the inpatient and outpatient stroke neurology service, and 80% developing novel brain targeting strategies to treat acute brain illness.
