Teaching at the High School Level

April 28th, 2025 by Kristine Hennessy

Welcome to the first of many blog entries about teaching at the High School level.   I have been a teacher for three years now at a local private high school.  I have taught all levels of difficulty, and have enjoyed my time thus far.

I figured that I would begin my blog by giving everyone a little background on who I am, and how I made the transition from graduate school to postdoc, and finally as a High School Biology teacher.  The road is not as winding as some might assume.  As an undergrad and graduate student, I loved nothing more than teaching.  Whether I was sharing my love of cell biology or teaching biomedical engineers how to work with cells, my favorite part of the day was seeing that light bulb go off above someone’s head.  It might not have happened every time I taught a class, but I will never forget the first time one of my undergraduate students was able to replicate a western blot.  When I received an offer at a local high school to teach biology, I jumped at the chance.  I have been learning and teaching ever since.

I hope I will be able to assist you in thinking about a career as a high school teacher, and look forward to your questions and responses.
